Art City Days officially kicked off last weekend with a band concert in the park featuring local musicians, but most events in Springville's annual summer celebration get under way Wednesday.
Art City Days is the first of a summer full of city celebrations throughout Utah County. Every week from now until the middle of September, cities will take turns sponsoring carnivals, dances, parades and other cultural events. As always, the main event in this year's Art City Days will be the Grand Parade, which is scheduled Saturday morning, June 11, along Main Street and 400 South.
The theme of this year's parade is "Magical Memories," and grand marshals will be Otto and Dorothy Collings. Otto Collings taught for many years in Springville schools, and he and his wife have been active in community projects for decades.
On Friday morning a special parade for children only will be held at Memorial Park. The parade begins at 10 a.m. at Grant School and will proceed north around the park until it reaches the Springville LDS Stake Center on 300 South. The City-of-Fun Carnival begins Thursday on the north lawn of the Civic Center and will operate daily through Saturday.
If a good meal is what you're after, Art City Days offers a wide variety of food. From Wednesday through Saturday, concession booths will be set up on the east lawn of the Civic Center. One of those booths will be the Volunteer Firemens' Breakfast, which will be served from 6 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Kiwanis Club will hold a barbecue 5 p.m. Saturday at Spring Acres Arts Park.
Another big event is the Springville Playhouse production of "Lend Me a Tenor," a story about an opera singer who becomes ill right before his big performance. Producers scramble to find a replacement, but at the last minute the singer returns from his stupor. The playhouse is located on the lower level of the Springville Civic Center, and the production has four remaining shows.
The celebration wraps up Saturday night with the Little Buckaroo Rodeo at the Springville Arena and the 23rd Army Band Concert at Spring Acres Arts Park. Shortly after dark Saturday, the festivities will climax with a fireworks show at Springville High School.
