Rioting Hindu nationalists attacked government buildings and killed at least one Muslim in India's only majority Muslim state after militants assassinated the second Hindu politician there in one week.
Police have blamed both shootings on Muslim militants fighting for independence in Jammu-Kashmir. No one has claimed responsibility.Militant separatists also kidnapped two British tourists and said they would be held until three jailed guerrillas are freed, officials said Tuesday.
Hours after the early morning shooting of Ruchir Kumar, a local right-wing politician of the Hindu-led Bharatiya Janata Party, party activists took to the streets and attacked Muslim homes, damaging them with wooden poles and rocks and setting fire to at least one.
They also stoned and ransacked government buildings.
