ELDERS SHOWS APPALLING IGNORANCE

I was appalled on reading Joycelyn Elders' statement printed June 2 about gays in the Scouting programs. I got the impression that the surgeon general doesn't really know what she's talking about; she's just attempting to be "politically correct."

The statements "sexuality is up to the individual," as if orientation were a choice, and "what goes on in someone's bedroom" do not address the issue of whether someone is gay or straight but instead suggest that sexual intimacy should be condoned. Remember, she's talking about young kids from 8 years old to teenagers.A major part of the purpose of Scouting is to teach children moral behavior, as is evidenced by the Scout Motto (loyal, brave, trustworthy, courteous, etc.). Sex, physical intimacy, even serious dating must not be condoned, much less encouraged, among the young people, gay or straight, as they do not have the experience or the emotional maturity to handle such relationships.
