Q & A

Q. How much does a giant panda weigh?

A. An adult giant panda weighs about 220 pounds. At five months, it weighs about 22 pounds--and that's when it begins to feast on bamboo. When the giant panda is 1 1/2 years old, it goes out on its own. Pandas can eat a lot of food. Scientist believe that the animal was originally a carnivore because of the way its sotmach is designed. But the giant panda eats only bamboo, and it takes about 33 pounds of bamboo shoots and leaves to keep this panda going each day. To get this much food, the giant panda spends 16 to 24 hours a day eating or looking for food. The giant panda has been around for about three million years!
