The Nasdaq stock market on Friday said that average daily trading volume rose 22 percent in the first half of 1994 while the number of listed companies rose to record levels.
Nasdaq said average daily trading volume was 299.4 million shares in the second quarter, up from 245.5 million shares in the 1993 period.Measured in dollars, Nasdaq said average daily volume was $6 billion in the first half of 1994, up from an average $5.1 billion during the same period in 1993.
Nasdaq said 251 initial public offerings were launched on the exchange through May 24, raising $6.9 billion. That's up from 214 IPOs for the similar period last year, which raised $6.2 billion.
In addition, companies on Nasdaq rose to 4,812, surpassing the previous high of 4,781 companies in September 1987.
The share gains leader on Nasdaq this year is Hologic Inc., maker of X-ray systems.
