Dave Fleming couldn't figure out what was more surprising, that he got eight runs in one inning, or that the eight runs were off Jimmy Key.
"It was just unbelievable for me to get eight runs," said Fleming, after his Seattle Mariners routed Key and the New York Yankees 12-6 Saturday with the help of an eight-run fifth inning."I gave back our lead, but I didn't give them the lead," said Fleming (6-10), who led 2-0 before the Yankees tied the score in the fourth. "That's the whole point of pitching against a guy like Key. I gave the lead up but I didn't give them the lead."
Fleming, who allowed nine hits and three runs in seven innings, benefitted from a 19-hit outburst by the Mariners against three Yankees pitchers, including 10 off Key (12-2), who had his 11-game winning streak snapped.
Ken Griffey Jr. collected five hits, all singles, in six at-bats, but drove in only one run.
Indians 9, Twins 1
At Cleveland, Charles Nagy pitched a five-hitter for Cleveland's third straight complete game and Albert Belle homered again as the Indians beat the Minnesota Twins.
Belle has homered in six of the last eight games and has hit safely in 18 of the last 19.
His 24th home run, a two-run shot off ex-Buzzman Eddie Guardado (0-1), put Cleveland ahead to stay 2-1 in the first inning.
Red Sox 10, Athletics 2
At Boston, Tom Brunansky hit his seventh career grand slam and Mo Vaughn hit his 21st homer as the Red Sox ended Oakland's eight-game winning streak.
White Sox 5, Brewers 0
At Chicago, Alex Fernandez pitched a four-hitter and Darrin Jackson drove in three runs, lifting the Chicago.
Angels 1, Orioles 0
In Baltimore, Mark Langston pitched a three-hitter for his first shutout in two years, retiring the last 16 batters he faced, and Tim Salmon singled in the game's only run in the eighth inning.
Langston (5-4) walked one and struck out five while recording his first shutout since beating the Texas Rangers on June 17, 1992.
Blue Jays 7, Royals 6
In Kansas City, Mo., Ed Sprague's sacrifice fly in the eighth broke up reliever Rusty Meacham's club record streak of 221/3 scoreless innings and gave the Toronto a victory.
Meacham (0-1) had broken the Royals record of scoreless innings by a reliever of 201/3 innings set by Dan Quisenberry in 1981.
Tigers 6, Rangers 1
In Arlington, Texas, Mike Moore pitched a seven-hitter as Detroit beat Texas. Moore walked two and struck out five.
