Patrick Muturi of Kenya overtook countryman Andrew Musuva with about a mile to go Sunday to win the 1994 City of San Francisco Marathon.
Karolina Szabo of Hungary won the women's division.Muturi won in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 34 seconds. He slowed at the 25-mile mark and Musuva passed him. Then Muturi picked up speed.
"I felt that I would win at the 20-mile point because I felt I had a lot of strength," Muturi said. "But soon I got worried when my pace started going down. At that point I said I was going to do my best."
Musuva was second in 2:18:21 and Dainius Virbickas of Lithuania third in 2:18:54.
Szabo led the women in 2:44:34, followed by Barbara Acosta of Santa Cruz at 2:47:18 and Gillian Beschloss of Britain at 2:54:17.
Muturi and Szabo earned $10,000 each.
About 4,000 runners covered the hilly 26.2-mile course on a cool and foggy day.
