Since he hasn't removed his baseball cap during either of the Kansas City Chiefs' two exhibition games, Steve Bono is eager about the first time he can use his helmet.

Bono is trying to win the backup quarterback spot behind Joe Montana, but he hasn't taken a snap. Instead, it's Matt Blundin who has thrown 36 preseason passes. The Chiefs are giving Blundin every opportunity to win the position, a fact they made clear to Bono when he was acquired from San Francisco in the spring.

Bono is scheduled to get some work, and he is under pressure to perform.

The backup spot may be determined by how Blundin fares. If coach Marty Schottenheimer and offensive coordinator Paul Hackett think Blundin is ready, the job is his. If not, it's Bono's.
