Jimmy Hogarth, from Orkney, Scotland, may look a bit loony, but he's just practicing his live-scarecrow technique. The Scottish Natural Heritage in Kirkwall will be recruiting people to act as human scarecrows to scare off the migratory barnacle geese that descend on the Orkney Islands every winter. The barnacle geese, which have become wise to traditional scarecrows, destroy acres of pasture every year. The scarers' job will be to wave their arms about and run toward the geese.
