Democrats like Vic Fazio, chairman of the party's Congressional Campaign Committee, may have mis-stepped by attacking the "Christian right." Although some scandal-mongering TV preachers richly deserve the skunk label, the political danger of assaults like Fazio's is that they will offend all conservative Christians - who are legion.
According to national polls reprinted in The American Enterprise magazine, 52 percent of the supposedly secular Woodstock Generation attended church or synagogue within seven days of their interview with the survey-taker. Seventy-two percent say that less religious training for children today is a "change for the worse." Only 24 percent of Woodstockers favor legalizing marijuana, and 88 percent believe extramarital sex is wrong. All this suggests that Fazio et al. should stop casting their barbs at the American majority that claims to be both Christian and conservative.
