Just a note of thanks and gratitude to Maren Jeppsen for her sensitive treatment on the heartless destruction of Union Fort (Forum, Aug. 1). Money speaks louder than history, gratitude or beauty.
Many meetings were held before the county commissioners. Neighbors and descendants of those hardy pioneers who created Union Fort in 1849 pleaded and petitioned for its preservation many times. They far outnumbered the few men representing "big business" who held the money. The only argument in opposition was it had been selected as the future spot for a shopping mall. So history and beauty are destroyed. Concrete and money take over. What could have been Memory Lane is gone.
Please don't call it Fort Union Shopping Center. That name can never bring back the pioneer spirit that prevailed for 144 years.
