A one-eyed 6-year-old dog named Blackie has inherited $37,000, but the windfall has bought him no sweet bones, just a bitter legal battle.
Blackie's owner, John Goodchild, died of lung cancer in February 1993, but before he passed away he made sure his trusty companion would be taken care of, the West Australian newspaper reported Wednesday.Goodchild left $37,000 in a trust account for Blackie, to be administered by dog kennel owner Barbara Norris. However, his son David has since contested the will.
Blackie snoozed under the bar table in the Western Australian Supreme Court on Tuesday as Norris and David Goodchild argued over who should take care of him, the newspaper reported.
Goodchild told the court he would look after Blackie for free but demanded Blackie's trust be split among all the beneficiaries.
Norris said she promised a dying Goodchild senior that Blackie would live in her home as part of her family.
Supreme Court Judge David Ipp has reserved his decision.
