Delta Air Lines, in the midst of a profound cost-cutting program that is trimming thousands of non-union jobs, said Friday it is laying off 101 more pilots.

The Atlanta-based airline laid off 447 pilots last year. The new layoffs come as the company is talking with its pilots, the only major employee group at Delta with a union, about relinquishing a scheduled 2 percent pay raise."The reduction in pilot staffing is consistent with that in other areas at Delta where increased efficiencies are making job reduc-tions necessary," the airline said in a statement.

The Air Line Pilots Association, the union that represents Delta's 8,600 pilots, said it would hold a special meeting next week to formulate a response.
