Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., 2084 E. 3900 South, a mountaineering equipment distributor, is featured on the cover of the August issue of World Trade Magazine, which has an estimated readership of 300,000.
The company relocated to Salt Lake County in 1991 when Peter Metcalf said he had enough of Ventura, Calif., where none of his employees could afford to buy a home, ambitious regulators threatened him with closure, high workers' compensation costs and rising insurance costs."World Trade Magazine's decision to feature Black Diamond as their August cover story is not only a terrific honor, but also a validation of the positive impact environment can play on the success of a company," said Peter Metcalf, president and chief executive officer.
Michael Lawson, president and chief executive officer of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah, an agency that helped recruit Black Diamond to Utah, said the company "is a perfect example of the value-added companies that EDCU is targeting. It is a clean, efficient and highly professional company that produces a high quality product."
The article noted that after Black Diamond moved to Salt Lake City, company workers' compensation costs dropped by $75,000 and medical insurance bills declined by $20,000. Also, most of Metcalf's employees now own houses, something they couldn't afford in California.
Because the company is located close to the Wasatch Mountains, where gear can be tested and tried by customers, the article said the move was a good one.
