An Ogden man pleaded guilty but mentally ill to kidnapping and raping an 11-year-old girl, who was the daughter of a friend of his.
Richard Stein, 41, entered guilty pleas Thursday to five first-degree felonies following negotiations. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 6 by 2nd District Judge Michael Lyon. The judge also set a mental health hearing for Sept. 22.Stein confessed that he kidnapped the girl on April 6 and drove her around northern Utah where he sexually abused and assaulted her. He was charged with three counts of sodomy, kidnapping, rape and aggravated sexual abuse of a child, all first-degree felonies. One of the sodomy charges was dismissed following his guilty pleas.
Defense attorney Kent Snider said Stein suffers from depression and mood disorders. He was found competent to stand trial, which was scheduled to begin Monday.
Deputy County Attorney Bill Daines said Stein took the girl and her siblings to a grocery store in Ogden before leaving the siblings behind and kidnapping the victim.
Stein could be sentenced to serve up to 69 years to life in prison. He remains in the Weber County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bond.
