Speed Week is postponed to Sept. 10

WENDOVER, Nev. - Poor salt conditions on the Bonneville Salt Flats have forced the postponement of Speed Week until Sept. 10, according to Tourist Information Bureau's Kelli Housley.Officials of Southern California Timing Association Bonneville National Inc. will evaluate the condition of the flats on Sept. 1 and determine whether or not to go ahead with Speed Week on the association's "rain days" - Sept. 10-16.

Utes open hoop play in Maui

A trip to Maui against some of the nation's top teams will highlight the University of Utah's preseason basketball schedule.

The Utes, who return several top players from last year, including all-WAC performer Keith Van Horn, will face the likes of Indiana and Michigan from the Big Ten and Maryland of the ACC at the eight-team Maui tournament. Other top teams include Arizona State, Tulane and Texas A&M besides host Chaminade. The first-round pairings will be announced later this month.

Besides the 18-game WAC schedule, the Utes will play traditional in-state rivals Utah State and Weber State as well as USC and Cal State Fullerton.

The WAC tournament will be played in Albuquerque March 8-11 and once again Utah will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament. Utah's complete schedule is on page D4.

30 bullriders set for Delta Center

Thirty of the world's top bull riders will be on hand at the Delta Center Saturday, Aug. 27, for the Utah stop of Bull Riders Only, a unique three-round competition in which cowboys can win $20,000 in prize money. It is the 11th of 16 stops on the nationally televised tour that aims to pit some of the orneriest bulls against top cowboys. The 1994 tour will pay $350,000 total, culminating with the world championship Oct. 15 in Denver.

Cowboys expected to ride at the Delta Center event include top seed Terry Don West of Henryetta, Okla.; Canadian champion Wes Cyr of Nanton, Alberta; and Dax Lackey of Boerne, Texas. Bulls on the tour include 440 Blowout; the 1993 bucking bull of the year, 19 Grasshopper, who has a 100 percent buckoff rate; 100 Farmington, a 2,200-pounder and another that bucks off 100 percent of his riders; and Battle Axe, a 90 percent bucker.
