AARP TALKS BIG BUT IS INEFFECTIVE

SHARE AARP TALKS BIG BUT IS INEFFECTIVE

Millions of senior citizens have joined the banner of AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) only to find its leadership questionable, first with the cataclysmic insurance faux pas and now with inertia as it concerns health-care reform.

Although big talkers, the association has found a way to be for health care, apple pie and all things good, yet maintain a political position of neutrality. This means that millions of us seniors will have no impact on legislation. We don't know whether the association favors President Clinton's philosophy or Sen. Robert Dole's. There has been definite sympathy for a single-payer reform bill within the ranks, but the executives of AARP are dubious. It appears seniors will have no influence on the Congress. This sorry state of affairs comes from the fact that AARP and The Prudential Insurance Co. are virtually one and the same thing. AARP has the image of all the other special interest groups and their PACs.

Perhaps we should form another senior citizen group or find one already organized to join.
