Two men fell 250 feet to their deaths and a third worker was in satisfactory condition when a basket atop a construction crane broke loose and plummeted to the floor of the Kingdome.

The accident Wednesday night halted work at the dome, which was closed a month ago after acoustic tiles began falling from the stadium's ceiling. Two painters sandblasting the ceiling were in a basket attached to the end of the nearly vertical crane when the top portion of the crane failed, Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Georgia Taylor said.

The basket struck the crane's cab, injuring the operator.

Dick Sandaas, interim Kingdome director, said all work at the stadium would be halted while the accident is investigated. He did not estimate how long that might take, but said the target re-opening date of Sept. 18 was "on hold."

The crane basket "flattened that cab like a pancake," said worker Bob McCormick, who had been outside the Kingdome and ran in when he heard a loud crash.

The names, ages and hometowns of the two dead men were being withheld until relatives could be notified.
