Bravo for the people who protested the rodeo ("Protesters parade objections in front of Days of '47 Rodeo," July 24).
Slick promoters have built rodeo into a multimillion-dollar animal abuse industry because cattle can't scream. They can only bawl and sometimes they're too terrified to even do this. The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) likes to say its "rules" protect animals in rodeos. It dreamed up these so-called rules when it couldn't get one national humane society to support rodeo. The rules are as worthless as hats in hurricanes. Take, for example, the brand-new rule that fines rodeo performers who "jerkdown" a calf, that is, slam him or her to the ground.
One veterinarian, Dr. C.G. Haber, in 30 years as a federal meat inspector saw the inside of many broken animals discarded from rodeos. He described many as "so extensively bruised that the only areas in which the skin was attached to the flesh were the head, neck, leg, and belly."
Please, folks, do not support this ruthless, cruel industry.
