Canadian men are butting out of the smoking habit in larger numbers than women, a government agency said Thursday.

Statistics Canada said half of all men who ever smoked have quit. But only 44 percent of women who ever smoked have stopped for good.Almost three quarters of smokers have tried to quit at least once, it said. Canadian men are more likely than women likely to have smoked in the first place.

The national study shows that 31 percent of adult Canadians smoke cigarettes, about the same number as in 1991.
