A West Jordan man faces investigation of automobile homicide after telling police he struck an elderly Midvale man while driving drunk Saturday, then left the scene.

Police believe 57-year-old William Norman was struck and killed while crossing the street about 3:45 a.m. Saturday. His body was found lying in the roadway near 10 E. Center. Midvale investigators also found grill parts from a Nissan vehicle strewn about the intersection of Center and Main streets. The West Jordan man, 37, was taken into custody at his house after his wife called police to report he had arrived home saying he'd hit someone, Midvale Police Chief Gerald Maughan said.

"We would eventually have got him, but that sure saved us some time," Maughan said. "We knew what kind of car it was, we had the grill . . . here."

The man told West Jordan officers he had struck someone who unexpectedly appeared on the street. He said he was drunk at the time, became scared and left the scene, according to a Midvale police report.

The man was bailed out of jail Sunday and charges have not been filed against him. His truck, showing substantial front-end damage, was seized as evidence.
