Utah's 9,175 retail stores had sales totaling $12.4 billion in 1992, up 48 percent from the total five years earlier, the Census Bureau said Thursday.
Retail sales nationally in 1992 were up 27 center percent from 1987.Fastest-growing sales in Utah were by computer and software stores. Their sales were up 201 percent over the five years and amounted to $52.6 million in 1992.
Grocery stores had the highest sales, $2.7 billion, up 46 percent from 1987.
New-car dealers were second at $2.2 billion and department stores followed at $1.3 billion.
