The unemployment rate stood at a low 4.5 percent in Sevier County in the latest available report, a decline from 5.2 percent the previous year.
The report, compiled by Job Service, noted 5,680 people employed in Sevier County as compared to 5,360 the previous year.Garfield had the highest unemployment rate in the state. Garfield's unemployment was 8 percent but reflected a slight decline from 9.7 percent in 1993.
Closing of one sawmill in Escalante and a large cutback of employees at another one in Panguitch contributed to the county's high unemployment.
Wayne County's unemployment rate was 6.5 percent, a slight rise from the 6.3 percent in 1993, with 700 people employed as compared to 670 the previous year.
In Piute County, the unemployment rate was listed at 7.0 percent. The report noted 200 people on the payroll as compared to 190 last year.
