Not satisfied with allowing the interval between the July 24 festivities and the county fair in late August to pass without a celebration, this city will hold its own observance - Horseshoe Mountain Days - on Aug. 5 and 6.

Norbest, the turkey marketing firm, is donating around 280 pounds of prime turkey to the event and training local civic leaders in its preparation, according to special recipes at its kitchens in Salt lake City. They'll prepare the turkey and then serve it at food booths along Main Street on Aug. 6.

But there'll be much more than generous helpings of turkey during Horseshoe Mountain Days - named for one of the major peaks on Manti Mountain.

Other activities will include contests: arm wrestling, cow-pie throwing, marble shooting, bed and bathtub races, pie-eating and hatchet throwing.

There'll also be street dancing, a fly-in at the airport, including sky-divers, hot-air balloon and helicopter rides.

Mountain men and nature Americans will hold encampments, and there'll be a re-enactment of the signing of the Blackhawk treaty and historic tours.

"We're going to jazz up those supposedly dull, dog days of August," said board member Monte Bona.
