Many golfers consider Wasatch Mountain State Park Golf Course to be one of the state's finest golf courses. What most golfers don't realize is that there is another state park golf course in Utah also worth visiting.

While it may not be on quite the same level as Wasatch Mountain, Palisade State Park Golf Course near Manti is a gem of a course just waiting to be discovered.Set up in the mountains at approximately 6,200 feet, the 9-hole Palisade layout overlooks the crystal blue Palisade Lake below. The golf course is surrounded by sandstone rock sprinkled with cedar trees.

While the layout isn't anything to shout about, the course is in excellent condition with plush fairways and greens not seen in many mountain or rural golf courses in Utah.

Most of the holes run north and south up the side of a hill, so you're going uphill on one hole and downhill the next. Pine trees in the 20-foot range are common, dotting the course throughout.

The two par-3s, Nos. 2 and 5, both head northwest, slightly uphill. Both of the par-5s, the 4th and 7th holes are each under 500 yards, but they seem longer since they go uphill.

Two of the best holes might be the final two, which are nearly identical in length at 382 and 372 yards from the whites, and both go downhill. The 8th is a narrow driving hole with a lake to the right of the green. The 9th slightly jogs to the right off an elevated tee and finishes with a tricky green that is easy to three-putt.

According to head pro Denny Bearden, most of the course's business comes from the campers at the State Park campgound down by the lake, which is within walking distance of the course. Bearden said, although most of his customers come from Salt Lake and Utah counties, in the last month he's had visitors from England, Australia and France as well as other states.

You can't beat the price at Palisade either. At just $6 per nine, it is one of the better bargains in the state.

The only thing missing is another nine holes and that problem is being taken care of starting this month. A new nine will begin construction north of the present course with a a completion date projected for July of 1996.
