Afternoon light filters through the forest smoke as firefighters check that a back burn hasn't gone over their heads in the Payette National Forest near McCall, Idaho. Also in Idaho, a suspicious fire sparked near a state highway destroyed one home and forced the evacuation of 28 others near Idaho City, about 18 miles northeast of Boise. In northwestern California, flames threatened 150 homes near Loyalton for the third time in as many days Friday, then shifted away with afternoon winds. At one point, a burning ember carried about a mile by fickle winds landed in the yard of a home, but firefighters squashed the spot fire within 2 feet of the house. More than 2,000 firefighters were battling the 27,000-acre blaze, which broke out Tuesday. Firefighters are also working to control fires in Washington and Montana.
