SHARE ENGLAND, CANADA REIN IN AUSTRALIAN SWIMMERS

After winning nine swimming finals in a row in two days in the Commonwealth Games, the Australians were restricted to two as English swimmers won two and Canada won its first.

Canada swept the five wrestling finals and South Africa won its first medal after a 36-year absence, in cycling.New Zealand's Mark Rendell won the gruelling men's 181.9-kilometer cycling road race in 4 hours, 46 minutes, 7.91 seconds.

Kathryn Watt, Australia's 1992 Olympic champion, easily defended her Commonwealth cycling road race title by beating Canada's Linda Jackson by 30 seconds.

England's Neil Thomas won the men's all-round title at gymnastics and Canada's Stella Umeh won the women's.

In shooting, gold medals went to Canadian brothers Mark and Matthew Bedlington in the men's pairs running target, Canadians Sharon Bowes and Karen Morton in the women's pairs smallbore rifle, three position, India's Jaspal Rana and Ashok Pandit in the men's pairs center-fire pistol, and Australia's Albert Bowden and Geoffrey Grenfell in the fullbore rifle pairs.
