Geoff Bodine won the GM Goodwrench Dealers 400 at Michigan International Speedway while Ernie Irvan was on life support in an Ypsilanti hospital. Bodine averaged 139.914 mph as he beat Mark Martin by about seven car-lengths.
Irvan suffered severe head and chest injuries when the right front tire on his Ford Thunderbird appeared to be cut during practice, sending the car nearly head-on into the turn two wall.
