TOP SPEED CUT TO 15 MPH IN CITY CREEK CANYON

SHARE TOP SPEED CUT TO 15 MPH IN CITY CREEK CANYON

Speed limits in City Creek Canyon will be cut Friday to 15 mph for both cars and bikes.

The speed-limit change is part of an ongoing effort to promote safety in the canyon, Salt Lake Mayor Deedee Corradini said. More than 100 accidents occurred on the canyon road last year.Florence Reynolds, chairwoman of the Mayor's City Creek Citizens Advisory Committee, said many accidents involving cars and bikes will be prevented with the lower speed limit.

"We're sure part of the reason for the accidents is because people aren't following the speed limit," Reynolds said.

"We are trying to prevent a major accident from happening. If we want to keep the canyon safe for everybody, let's obey the law," Corradini said. "Salt Lake is committed to making sure that the canyon's visitors have an enjoyable and safe visit. We have a responsibility to ensure their safety while providing an enjoyable experience."

The change was recommended by the City Creek Citizens Advisory Committee and the Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee.
