The Phoenix Firebirds erupted for six runs in the second inning off Tacoma Tigers starter Miguel Jimenez and then cruised to a 9-3 victory in Pacific Coast League play Tuesday night in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Dan Carlson notched his team-high and league-leading 12th victory of the year after relieving starter Brad Brink in the second inning.Brink's right shoulder tightened up after one inning, in which he allowed one hit. In five innings, Carlson allowed five hits and one run while striking out six batters.

Jimenez was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on 10 hits over five innings.

Calgary 12, Tucson 11

At Tucson, Ariz., Greg Pirkl hit three home runs and drove in seven runs to lead Calgary.

Pirkl also had a single and groundout. The only other Calgary player to hit three or more homers in a game is New York Yankees outfielder Danny Tartabull, who also hit three during a 1985 game.

Albuquerque 4, Las Vegas 3

At Las Vegas, Don Barbara had three hits, including a solo homer, and Brian Barnes struck out nine in six innings as the Albuquerque Dukes defeated the Las Vegas Stars.

The Dukes led 1-0 on Barbara's second-inning homer, his 12th of the season, off losing pitcher Scott Chiamparino (2-1).
