Thomas Kuo, a junior at Brighton High School, and Brittany Nelson, a sophomore at Bountiful High School, are Utah's state winners in the annual National Peace Essay Contest sponsored by the U.S. Institute for Peace.
They repesented the state in a special awards program in Washington, D.C., in late June.Essays for 1994 focused on the U.N. role in peacemaking and humanitarian efforts, including whether the agency should become involved in the internal conflicts of nations.
Each state winner received a $500 college scholarship and the right to compete for national recognition and awards of up to $10,000.
