Karen Kurreck of the United States captured the world title today in the women's individual time trial - a brand-new event at the World Cycling Championships.

The 32-year-old from Cupertino, Calif., beat Canadian Anne Samplonius by 44.9 seconds in an unexpected showing by North American athletes in the 29.6-kilometer race through the streets of Catania. French veteran Jeannie Longo finished third.
