Fresno State linebackers Gene Smith, Ron Papazian and Chris Burk were placed on indefinite probations Thursday by athletic director Gary Cunningham for recent run-ins with the law.

Cunningham said the players, who will be allowed to play this season, were given probations to "assure we don't have further problems."Smith is charged with petty theft of vitamins from a health food store and Papazian is under investigation in an alleged shoplifting of garden supplies from a hardware store. Burk is charged with mayhem for allegedly biting off part of a man's lip during a barroom fight.
