Maine coon cats are descendants of Angora cats brought to Maine and Massachusetts in the mid-19th century by mariners returning from the Far East.

They have raccoonlike coats of streaked brown and a prominent neck ruff. Maine coon cats can withstand extremely cold weather and are said to be good rat-catchers.
