PLANS NEARLY DONE FOR OGDEN SIGNALS

Traffic engineers are completing plans for a $3 million effort to get their signals straight.

The aim is to coordinate 80 Ogden-area traffic signals via computer by next summer. The program eventually will be expanded to include 113 intersections. When finished, the system will be much like one installed in Salt Lake City in 1983 and upgraded since then. A similar signal coordination effort is under way in the Provo area.

Benefits from smoother traffic flows on high-volume streets include fewer stops, better gasoline mileage and less air pollution.

But it will take a major overhaul of some existing signal equipment and installation of some $1.3 million worth of lines.
