Dr. Herman James Sheffield passed away in Loma Linda, California, on Sunday, July 31, 1994 following a long illness.
He was born in Layton, Utah on Dec. 11, 1911.He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son, Frank; daughter, Sandra, and stepchildren, Paul and Kathy Saxon, as well as one sister, Erma Criddle, and one brother, Dean Sheffield, both of Salt Lake City.
Dr. Sheffield became the fifth president of San Bernardino Valley College, serving from 1958 to 1966. During this period seven major buildings were constructed and the student body numbers more than doubled.
He was instrumental in obtaining a gift of land from the Finkelstein Foundation, and with other donations 500 acres were obtained for site of the Crafton Hills College.
President Sheffield came to Valley College from he University of Southern California, where he was Director of Admissions. Prior to his retirement in 1973, he served as superintendent of the Ventura County Community College District.
Between 1941 and 1943, he was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy in Guam, after serving in Los Angeles as officer in charge of selecting young men for college Naval training.
A testimonial service under the direction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m., in the Cortner Chapel, 221 Brookside Ave., Redlands, Calif. with prior viewing from 8:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
