A man walking his dog Wednesday morning was severely injured when a pickup truck hit him at 400 S. 100 West.

James W. Pay, 52, Spring-ville, was in critical condition with multiple fractures at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, a hospital spokesman said.Pay was walking with his dog in the shadow of some large trees when he attempted to cross 400 South. The sun was in 25-year-old Keith Loveless' eyes as he drove eastbound on the road about 8 a.m., said Springville police Lt. Oliver Nielsen.

"Neither one of them saw the other until it was too late," he said.

The pickup struck Pay and his dog, killing the canine.

Nielsen said Pay was not walking in the crosswalk, and speed did not appear to be a factor in the accident.
