Two welders suffered several broken bones Tuesday afternoon when they fell 30 feet from a scaffold on which they were working.

Steve Lowe, 37, and Kelly Halladay, 34, both of Orem, are in fair condition at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. Lowe broke his legs and an arm; Halladay broke a foot and injured his back, a hospital spokesman said. The men were using welding torches to cut a piece of metal free at a construction site at 1000 E. Center St. about 2:30 p.m. As they pulled the metal down, it struck the scaffold, causing it to buckle, said Orem police Sgt. Gerald Nielsen. Both men fell about 30 feet to the ground.
