New Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer was so eager to get on with the job that he drove to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist's summer home in Vermont to get sworn in.
Breyer and his wife, Joanna, traveled from their home in the Boston area to Rehnquist's house in the mountains of Greensboro, Vt., on Wednesday. There, Joanna Breyer was the only witness as Rehnquist administered the oaths that made her husband the nation's 108th justice, said court spokeswoman Toni House.
A public swearing-in is scheduled for Wednesday at the White House, and another investiture likely will be held in the high court's stately courtroom before the fall term begins Oct. 3, House said.
Breyer replaces Justice Harry A. Blackmun.
