A nurse's station will be set up in Juab County's West Desert community of Callao to serve people in the area.
Juab County Commissioners agreed to help Ester Frescas set up the basic aid station in the remote area of Juab County. Frescas, a registered nurse who has worked at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City, lives in Callao.Frescas said she wouldn't charge for her time or services but would provide assistance as a volunteer.
Rex Klarich, who owns some small cabins in the area, has offered one of the cabins as a center and as a place to keep emergency supplies.
"I would work under a medical doctor sponsor," Frescas said. The doctor would be located in Delta, which is closer than Nephi.
Commissioners agreed to support the venture beginning immediately. While there was no budget left for the emergency medical technicians in the area, commissioners pledged to try to find supplies to begin operating the remote aid station as soon as possible.
Frescas said she would work with the EMTs from the area and would coordinate efforts with them. In the future, she said, she would like to coordinate with the county health department to offer vaccinations to area residents.
Often, she said, those injured in Juab County's West Desert area go into shock before an IV can be started. With her knowledge, and with doctor approval, an IV could be started before a patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
"The supplies will cost no more than $300," said Randy Freston, county administrator/engineer.
