After three straight losses the Salt Lake Buzz needed a game like Friday's.
The Buzz combined a strong pitching performance by Eddie Guardado with a big offensive night from Marty Cordova and Scott Stahoviak to give them an 8-2 victory over the Phoenix Firebirds.Salt Lake is now 19-23 in the second half of the PCL season, three games behind Northern Division-leading Calgary.
Guardado (10-6) needed only 86 pitches to notch the complete game victory. He scattered six hits for the game and had a shutout going through six innings.
Cordova got the Buzz on the scoreboard first with a solo homer in the third. He later cleared the bases with a triple in the seventh to chase Phoenix starter Solomon Torres. Cordova finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBI. He now has a 16-game hitting streak.
Stahoviak was nearly as impressive with the bat. The Buzz third baseman doubled, homered, scored three runs and drove in a pair. Stahoviak's home run was a tape-measure 450-footer to right in the eighth.
J.R. Phillips hit a two run homer in the seventh to put the Firebirds on the scoreboard, but it wasn't near enough.
Tonight, RHP Oscar Munoz, who was recently recalled to the Buzz after spending a few weeks at Double-A Nashville, will be on the mound in the third game of the four-game set. Phoenix is scheduled to start Bob Gomez.
After the series finale against the Firebirds Sunday, the Buzz return to Franklin Quest Field for a 12-game homestand beginning Monday.
