More than 500,000 households in rural areas of the United States are still hauling water to their homes from springs and other sources.

To kick start his campaign for "Water 2000 - a faucet in every home," Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy traveled to this small community in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, just 340 miles from Washington, D.C., to turn on the first chlorinated water it has ever had."In the greatest country on earth, more than one half million rural American households still seek clean, running water," Espy said.
