Vernal police detective Rick Hawkins has been named interim sheriff for Uintah County after the resignation of Sheriff Lloyd Meacham.

Hawkins is the likely sheriff-elect, having won the June primary on the Republican ticket. He faces no Democratic opposition in the November election. He would have taken office in January 1995 but was appointed interim sheriff this week by Uintah County commissioners.

Meacham, who pleaded guilty earlier this year in a plea agreement to three class B misdemeanors of falsifying or altering government records, agreed to resign his office last week if the county would drop legal action against him and give him two months' severance pay.

County Commissioner Lorin Merrell said Hawkins' name was submitted to the commission by the Republican Central Committee for its consideration. Also submitted were the names of Vernal police officer and former sheriff Drew Christiansen, and Naples Police Chief Steve Guibord.

Merrell said it made sense to select Hawkins because he is the one who will likely take over as sheriff in January.
