Should the city's monthly garbage collection rates be increased by almost 50 cents to finance Clearfield's annual spring and fall cleanups? That's an issue the City Council will address Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. in the council chambers.

The Davis Solid Waste Management board not only increased tipping fees from $59 to $62 a ton and the fee for dumping a personal pickup load of trash from $3 to $7 last month but also discontinued free dumping for cities and residents during special semiannual cleanup periods. As a result, city manager Jack Bippes said, Clearfield cannot afford to continue the free annual spring and fall cleanups without some type of increase in fees. He said the council must decide to either discontinue the cleanups or increase monthly garbage collection fees by 48 cents, from $15.42 to $15.90, to fund them.
