In just 12 minutes Pleasant Grove's Justin Wilkes and a stingy Viking defense led by Jake Mattson quieted the music on Springville's homecoming celebration by stunning the Red Devils with 17 points in the first quarter. That was plenty of offense for the Vikings as they opened Region 8 play with a 24-6 thumping of Springville.
Wilkes was unstoppable in the first quarter, rushing for 107 yards, leaving Springville fans scrambling for their programs, mumbling for their defense to stop that No. 24 - that Wilkes kid.After a 22-yard field goal by Mark Jensen, Springville made it 10-0 as linebacker Jake Mattson scooped up a fumble and ran 28 yards for a touchdown.
A stunned Springville offense could never recover.
Pleasant Grove got the ball back after three Springville plays and a punt and scored again.
Wilkes took a handoff and broke free for a 34-yard touchdown run with 44 seconds left in the first quarter to make the score 17-0 after Jensen's PAT.
Pleasant Grove quarterback Paul Beagley capped off another Viking scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:57 remaining in second quarter that put the Vikings up 24-0.
Springville finally got on the score board with 48 seconds left in the third quarter when Joe Widdison scored from 2-yards out.
Wilkes finished with 174 of Pleasant Grove's 230 rushing yards.
Provo 35, Payson 27
At Payson, the Bulldogs picked up a big region road victory by defeating the Lions. Joel Gines threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more for Provo (3-1) as it handed Payson (3-1) its first defeat. Nate Martinson threw for 317 yards in a losing effort for the Lions.

At Spanish Fork, the third-ranked Thunderbirds soared into region play and swooped away with a victory over the Dons. Timpview improved to 3-1 overall with the victory.
