7 PEOPLE ARE INJURED IN AN EXPLOSION AT ARIZONA AIR-BAG PLANT

Seven people were injured, two critically, in an explosion that rocked an automobile air-bag manufacturing plant here Friday.

It was the second explosion in five years at the TRW plant in this Phoenix suburb.TRW officials said chemicals are normally mixed in the area where the explosion occurred, but the area was closed for refurbishing Friday and all chemicals had been removed from the area. No cause has been determined.

The names of the injured were not immediately released.

One man was on life support at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital-Osborn and another was in critical condition at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, said Fire Department spokesman Cliff Puckett.

The Arizona Industrial Commission's Division of Occupational Safety and Health said it would investigate. It said TRW has been cited eight times for various violations since 1989, mostly for improper labeling or storage of hazardous materials.
