An Ogden police officer fatally shot a man suspected of raping a woman early Saturday after the man allegedly reached for what police thought was a gun.
Officer John Valdez, 44, and his partner responded to a West Ogden neighborhood about 2:30 a.m. after residents called 911 saying a rape was in progress."When the two officers arrived at the scene they spotted the suspect and identified themselves as police officers," said Ogden Police Lt. Steve Turner. "As soon as the man saw the officers he released the woman and started running."
After the officers ordered the man to stop, he reportedly put his hand behind his back as if to reach for a gun.
"It appeared the man was armed and trying to pull a weapon from his waistband, so (Valdez) fired his 9 mm handgun several times to protect himself," said Turner.
The man then jumped a nearby chain link fence and ran into a back yard area behind several houses.
With the help of search dogs, investigator's found the man's body about 40 yards away from the fence. No weapon was found, Turner said.
The man, identified as Daniel D. Hickman, 34, address unknown, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The rape victim, who apparently did not know the man, was treated for minor injuries.
Valdez, a 14-year veteran of the Ogden police force, was placed on paid administrative leave. The incident is expected to be examined Monday by a department review board and the Weber County attorney's office, said Turner.
