Mountain bike racers converged on Vail, Colo. during the Grundig/UCI World Mountain Bike Championships Sept. 9-18 to compete for gold medals in the cross country, downhill, dual slalom and trials competitions.

Gene Hilton, from St. George, was the highest placed U.S. Junior rider taking third place in the cross country event. Hilton was able to ride through a minor mechanical problem to finish 3:22 down from the winning French rider Miguel Martinez. Cadel Evans from Australia was second. Another Utah rider Charles Heaton finished a strong seventh. John Osguthorpe and Aaron Liddell did not finish due to mechanical problems.Chelsey Apostol was the second placed American in the Junior Women's event placing 11th overall.

Park City veteran riders Cyndi Schwandt and Mark Smedley and Salt Laker Ed Chauner competed in the Veteran 35+ categories. Schwandt turned in a fine performance to earn fifth place while Smedley finished in 13th. Chauner was 25th.

Park City pro rider Teresa Eggerston competed in the Senior Women's event placing 34th out of 89 starters.
