DAM PROJECT TO CLOSE PART OF CANYON UNTIL SPRING

Reconstruction of the Olmsted diversion dam on the Provo River will close parts of the canyon until next spring.

The Central Utah Water Conservancy District will begin construction of a new dam and intake structure after Labor Day. The dam will be relocated downriver, and crews will replace 1,600 feet of pipeline. The Upper Falls picnic area will close Tuesday, Sept. 6. An old section of U.S. 189 from the picnic area to the eastern intersection of the new highway also will be closed. Access to Bridal Veil Falls will remain open at the western intersection of the old and new highways.

Construction will require that the hiking trail along the south side of the river between Bridal Veil Falls and the Olmsted dam to be closed.

The closures will remain in effect through the winter. The areas are expected to reopen in May 1995.
