DAVIS HAS REBOUNDED NICELY FROM POOR 1993

What a difference a year can make. Less than 12 months after having a streak of 21 consecutive winning seasons snapped, the Davis Darts are back - having already surpassed their 1993 win total.

Armed with the state's No. 5 ranking, the Kaysville crew plays host to defending 5A state champion Skyline, which gave Davis its worst loss last season, Friday at 7 p.m. Both teams share identical 3-1 overall marks and 1-0 Region 2 records. The third-ranked Eagles' lone loss came at West Jordan in the preseason, while the Darts dropped a heartbreaker at Brighton.Friday's showdown, pitting two of the state's top quarterbacks in Brandon Doman of Skyline and Davis' Kyle Olsen, will likely carry postseason ramifications. Region 2 is matched up with Region 4 in inter-region play, thus, it is imperative to finish in the top two in order to avoid a playoff opener at the likes of American Fork, Brighton, Mountain View or Orem.

Elsewhere in the state:

Olympus at West, 4 p.m.: The Panthers hope to parlay homecoming enthusiasm with the team's return to the state elite (ranked fifth in 4A). After a lopsided opening week loss at Pleasant Grove, West has reeled off three consecutive victories. Meanwhile, the top-ranked Titans loom as the team to beat this season. As early as it is, the Region 7 championship trophy likely becomes property of the winner.

Pine View at Delta, 4 p.m.: No. 1 plays host to No. 3 in a non-region 3A battle. Top-ranked Delta has met several tough challenges, while Pine View's lone setback came courtesy of a much bigger school from Las Vegas.

Whitehorse at Monument Valley, 4 p.m.: Utah's two mystery teams, dwelling in the southeast corner of the state, meet in an interesting 1A encounter.

Viewmont at Highland, 7 p.m.: A state playoff berth could well be on the line near Sugarhouse Park. Who wants it more?

Hunter at Bingham, 7 p.m.: After dispatching Taylorsville last week, the top-ranked Miners face a stiffer Region 3 test in Hunter. The Wolverines are coming off a tough loss at West Jordan.

Mountain View at Brighton, 7 p.m.: Two contenders fight for the right to stay with A.F. and/or Orem in the Region 2 race. The Bruins have won three straight, but the Bengals are always tough in the jungle.

American Fork at Orem, 7 p.m.: Utah County will be rocking when the No. 2 Cavemen face the Tigers, 5A finalists last season.

Timpview at Provo, 7 p.m.: City bragging rights are on the line as the always-tough Thunderbirds take their No. 3 ranking crosstown to face the much-improved Bulldogs.

Cedar City at Dixie, 7 p.m.: More than pride is on the line when these two rivals square off. The No. 4 Flyers face a tough test from preseason rankings leading Redmen.

San Juan at Kanab, 7:30 p.m.: A preview of the 2A state championship? Top-ranked Kanab can lay early claim to the crown with a win over No. 2 San Juan.

Mountain Crest at Box Elder, 7:30 p.m.: Can the Bees sting the 'Stangs? Film at 11. Postseason implications may rest on the outcome.
